OK, so I haven’t REALLY been travelling the world, but I crossed the globe musically for this spot for CUSO/VSO which was produced by Parktown. CUSO/VSO is an non-profit development agency that works through volunteers. If you have ever considered volunteering, especially overseas, be sure to visit their site.

Here’s an interview from “Donkey” that Adrian Langley(director), Matt Stefiuk (Actor/Producer) and myself did with the CBC, to promote the premiere of the film. While they got a few of the facts wrong (the movie only cost $5,000 and was not only shot, but FINISHED in Ottawa), it’s always nice to get some attention. “Donkey”, Adrian Langley’s latest feature has it’s World Premiere this Wed. and Thursday at the Rideau Center Empire Cinemas, in Ottawa, Ontario. The film, which features my music and sound, follows the story of Don Keys a “two-bit thug” who gets out of jail with two things on his mind – revenge on the man who put him behind bars, and the chance to find love with Bella. But fate has different plans for Don, as Bella is kidnapped, and Don must get her back.

Donkey Style…

So after over two years,and innumerable delays, Adrian Langley’s film “Donkey” is finally finished! The World Premiere will be held January 27th and 28th at the Rideau Centre Empire Cinema in Ottawa, Ontario. If you’re in the neighbourhood, feel free to come by!

Goodbye 2009… Hello 2010

So here we are at the start of a new decade… It’s with some sadness that I see 2009 pass into history. While it certainly wasn’t an easy year, in retrospect, it was a very important one for me. I got a chance to work on some very interesting projects, FINALLY finished the Donkey soundtrack and score (after about 2+ years) and met some amazing people, and learned a lot about myself and my craft.

2010 is shaping up to be another busy and interesting year. I’m pretty certain that it won’t be easy, but I’m looking forward to the challenges, lessons and rewards. Here’s wishing you and yours a very happy, very productive new Year.

First off… “Day Four” from Parktown Productions starts production on Monday… Buckle up, here we go!

TEDx and The Six String Nation

Through my association with Suzemuse, I got asked to handle the audio duties for the TEDxOttawa Conference. For those who don’t know TED stands for “Technology, Entertainment, and Design”, and it’s a conference held each year in Montery, California. It’s designed to bring together thinkers in all three disciplines to discuss, as their slogan says, “Ideas worth sharing”. Of course the problem is that the main TED conference is about $6000 to attend, which puts it out of reach of most. So in addition to making video podcasts of the talks available to all, this year TED decided to start TEDx – smaller local conferences under the aegis of the TED itself.

This years, TEDxOttawa was held on December 6th at the BitHeads Theatre. It was a day of inspiring, thought provoking, indeed, life changing speakers (check out our final speaker Ray Zahab here). But for me one of the high points was Jowi Taylor and “Voyageur” – The Six String Nation Guitar.

“Voyageur” is a piece of true Canadiana – something we can truly be proud of. Not only is constructed from various pieces of Canadian history – from Pierre Trudeau’s Canoe Paddle, to Wayne Gretzky’s hockey stick, to wood from the Golden Spruce- but it is an absolutely AMAZING instrument to play. And I was honored to be able to play it at the After-party. Perhaps the most amazing thing about this guitar though is Jowi himself. While he has seen this instrument played by the who’s who of the Canadian Music scene (it’s the featured instrument on the Canada Day Stage here in Ottawa), to him it’s most exciting when the local musicians get to play. Now if only I could have gotten that guitar on the Donkey score… well maybe the next one…

Hey! Rollbots, the show I Mixed and Sound Supervised (YTV here in Canada, 4Kids in the US) just won a Gemini Award! Congrats to George and Joey on the nod for Best Direction in an Animated Series. Sadly, Serge Cote, my friend, mentor, and composer for the show, didn’t win for the show’s music. Now if only we can convince the Academy to have a separate Sound category for Animation….

Here’s a little piece that Adrian Langley directed and scored and I did sound for. Produced for Zed Filmworks, we all hope it will be the start of a long and happy relationship between Fluke and Zed. This one was fun, since we didn’t end up using ANY of the production audio.
